Laying Down For Recumbent Cycles
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

Bicycles, without a doubt, are one of the greatest of all inventions. Some would say the airplane and the automobile are greater, but we must ask ourselves: what would they be -or rather, would they exist at all, were it not for the bicycle. With this taken into account, the mind boggles at the evolution of bicycles down the years. In only a hundred years bikes have gone from having a small back wheel preceded by a massive front wheel, all beneath an uncomfortable seat, to the more common bikes seen today, all the way to the recumbent cycles seemingly of tomorrow.

The recumbent cycle is a marvel not so much in engineering as in good common sense. By way of its horizontal design this type of bike has advantages unachievable by its more common cousin. As there is such a low front mass ratio, the wind resistance is markedly lowered. This in turn results in an ability to reach speeds unimaginable for an ordinary bicycle. In fact, at speeds meeting sixty-five miles per hour, recumbent cycles are the world record holders for speed of any non-motored land vehicle.

To make the matter more interesting, there is also the health and physical fitness sphere to consider. As recumbent cycles are horizontal, thus leaving the body in a primarily supine position, the heart doesn't have to work as hard. This reduces yet more potential somatic stress and also reduces tension for anyone suffering from a bad back or groin injuries.

Furthermore, the basic kinetics of recumbent cycles is that a greater amount of energy is garnered from this model as opposed to a normal bicycle. A standard bicycle, at its peak performance, makes use of gravity and the weight of the bicyclist to move it forward. With a recumbent, twice the amount of work from a person's weight can be put into the bike, which is another reason for their ability to achieve such swiftness. In addition, this feature is especially popular with recumbent enthusiasts on hills. When going up a hill, bodily stress is minimized and the basic leverage is maximized, making for a smooth, steady upward journey.
