Joining The Fun With A Recumbent Tandem Bicycle
Michalis 'BIG Mike' Kotzakolios

If you're looking for something to do with your extra time, you're not alone. If you're looking for something to do with that special someone, you're not alone. And again, you're not alone if you want to exercise but don't want to do it...well, alone. You might consider a recumbent tandem bicycle to stave off that alone time that you find so disappointing.

First, let's define our terms for sake of clarity. A recumbent bike is usually shorter than most bikes, though not always, and it is predominated by its feature of having a "laid back" design, particularly its seat, which is somewhat rocked back. Further, the pedals are often higher up on the frame of the bike, or at least fairly level with the seat, not unlike a Bigwheel, the popular 70's child's toy.

Tandem bikes are a little better known. This is simply a double or even triple-placed bike. That is to say, there is more than one seat on the bicycle, the frame of which is naturally elongated to reflect the needs of multiple cyclists.

The recumbent tandem bicycle brings these two design concepts together. Thus, imagine a bicycle that can hold 2 (or 3) people on it, each with his/her own seat. Yet the frame of the bike is lower and quite simply, stranger by verity of the placement of the seat, which is elongated and tilted back, and by the bike pedals, which are almost at eye level to the cyclists. This is the recumbent tandem bicycle.

But why, you may ask, would anyone want such a bicycle? The reasons, like the seats, are at least two in number. First, there is the health factor. As people get older, bicycles tend to create back strain. As well, the rest of the body is also placed under a good deal of pressure. This includes fatigue that occurs in the crotch and legs, all of which is circumvented -or at least reduced, by a tandem bike.

Then there is the social aspect of it. Why not ride duo? Tandem bikes hold a de facto symbolism for people that speaks of nothing short of unity, togetherness, and in some cases, of romance. Yet this is furthered with the use of a recumbent tandem bicycle, as it's strange, rare, marvelous, and different. When two people do something so starkly unique, such as ride a somewhat bizarre bike that attaches both seats together, then this is the making of bonding at one of the most powerful, if subtle, levels.
