Defining What Drives The Recumbent Cyclist

They're on the roads, out in the country, riding past farmland and bucolic fields. They're on the streets and even in the occasional alley, scudding past vehicles ten times their size and 1,000 times their weight. These are the daring men and women that collectively fall under the heading of recumbent cyclist.

But who is the recumbent cyclist? What sort of personality mirrors the being that would ride a bike so different, so strange to the eye? Chances are, such a person is a maverick, even a rebel. Certainly, at the very least, this type of person is a social adventurer, willing to put him or herself out into the public eye and even gently thumb a nose societies way as if to say "grow up, get with it" or even "see what I can do?"

In addition, it should be remembered that the recumbent cyclist is, at heart, simply a cyclist, no matter how seemingly mocking. By this measure, such a person is daring in that he or she is willing to brave the world of automobiles, sometimes weaving in and out of heavy traffic to achieve the ends sought. Yet the recumbent cyclist is even more daring, some might say reckless, as recumbent bikes are generally lower to the ground than the average bike, and for this, they are more at risk by being less visible.

No matter, they will tell you. Their adventure, by way of the type of bike they ride makes these cowboys and cowgirls masters of distance, going farther than normal bikes can go in a day's time. This is due to the design of their chosen bike, the recumbent. It allows the body to work harder and for longer periods of time, which equates to more distance traveled.

Their desire is to be out on the road, like other cyclists, to enjoy the adventure of living and the excitement of exercise. Theirs is a world more leisurely in many ways, as though they were kings and queens, being lead about on a sedan carried by loyal followers. Yet it is their own bodies, wills, and desires that pushes forth their sedans of the twenty-first century, and on into the future of tomorrow.
